THE ESPRESSO MACHINE STORY

The first patented step toward modern espresso

In 1884, Turin inventor Angelo Moriondo received a patent for a steam-driven machine that used hot water and steam to brew coffee much faster for busy cafés. His design was a bulk brewer rather than today’s single-shot espresso machine, but it established the core idea of forcing heated water through coffee under pressure. Later inventors refined the concept into the individual espresso machines we know today.
